Basic Directions:
- Give the assignment a heading
to identify the book and chapters.
- Use each vocabulary word in a sentence
of your own.
- Number the sentences and skip a line between sentences.
If typing, double space.
- Highlight or underline the vocabulary
word you are using. See example 1.
- Each sentence must be at least ten
words in length. Names and
numbers count as one word.
- You may use a derivative
of the word.
- Nouns may be plural (lamentation, lamentations). See example 2.
- Verbs may be any tense (lament, were lamenting, lamented,
etc.). See example 3.
- If you change the part of speech (adjective to adverb, for
example), list the original word and its part of speech, then your
derivative and its part of speech. See example 4.
- Use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Special Directions & Style Rules
for
particular assignments:
- Give the part of speech
of the vocabulary word. (noun, verb,
adjective, adverb)
- Give the definition of
the vocabulary word.
- Begin each sentence with a different
word. (NB: Any proper name counts as the same, unless you are
writing a particular fact about a specific historical person.)
- Begin each sentence with a different
part of speech.
- 1 article (A, The )
- 1 pronoun (He, My, Some, That
)
- 1 preposition (Around, Under
)
- 1 noun (Opponents, Sympathy )
- 1 verb (Distinguish, Lament,
Would )
- 1 conjunction (Although,
Since )
- 2 adjectives (Eloquent,
Disdainful )
- 2 adverbs (Doubtfully, Often
)
- Begin each sentence with a prepositional
phrase. See example 5.
- Begin each sentence with a subordinate
clause. See example 6.
- Include an adverb in
every sentence. See
example 7.
- Use only action verbs, no linking verbs (all forms of be, become, seem, etc.) See example 8.
Examples:
- Grieving mourners at the funeral sang a lamentation
for the fallen hero Beowulf.
- All the lamentations
at the funeral filled the air with a melancholy mood.
- Victims of the hurricane were lamenting the
tragic loss of their homes.
- lament,
verb. lamentably, adverb. Lamentably, King John had
little compassion for his overtaxed subjects.
- Across the river,
the hobbits were safe from their relentless pursuers.
- Although the
war was over, the desolate landscape held little promise of a
bountiful harvest.
- Takiko began singing shyly, but soon gained confidence
as the audience started clapping.
- The
defenders were vigilant.
Vigilant defenders prevented anyone from sneaking into the castle.
