Standards for Cooperative Interaction

Behave in a way that others will be willing to work with you.
  • "Hi!"
  • "Sorry, I forgot your name.  What is it?"
  • Share materials as needed.
  • Pull your share of the load.
Use positive body language
  • Smile!
  • Face toward the other group members.
  • Sit up and lean toward the group.
  • Look at the person who is talking.  Don't make him feel left out.
Listen
  • Seek to understand others' ideas.
  • "What do you think?"
  • "Why do you believe that?"
  • "How does that sound to you?"
  • Don't boss or monopolize.
Use positive responses
  • "Thank you."
  • "Let's try that."
  • "That's interesting."
Be helpful
  • Contribute ideas.
  • "Would you like some help?"
  • "How can I help you?"
  • "I have an idea. Would you like to hear it?"
  • "Can everyone see this?"
Disagree in a respectful way

  • Reject ideas, not people.  No put-downs.
  • "I'd rather not do that. Can we try another idea?"
  • "Sorry, I don't agree with that plan. How about..."
  • "I'm not sure that would work. What if we..."
  • "Okay, let's consider that. And here's another idea to think about."

Stay on task
  • It's not a social hour, but time for work.
  • Your behavior affects the group.
  • "Joe-Bob, please help."
  • "Where were we?"
  • "What should we do now?"
  • "What's our next step?"
  • "Let's get going on this."
