Three Paths to Wisdom:

Buddhism

History

Originated in Hinduism (Brahmanism) in India
Based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama (563-483 BC)
Buddhism came to China by the Silk Road in the first century AD.

Goal

The aim of Buddhist practice is to end the cycle of death and rebirth called samsara, by awakening to the realization of true reality, the achievement of liberation (nirvana).

4 Noble Truths
  1. All life is impermanent and contains suffering.
  2. Suffering is caused by greed.
  3. To get rid of suffering, free yourself of greed.
  4. To get rid of greed, follow the eightfold path.
Eightfold Path

Be mindful of improving yourself to reach enlightenment.
Do not harm any living thing.
Have compassion for others.
Do not go to extremes of pleasure or denial, but follow the middle path.

Some Proverbs
  • All sensations are merely dreams.
  • Be the teacher of your heart: do not allow your heart to become your teacher.
  • Like a spider caught in its own web is a person driven by fierce cravings.
  • Everything changes; nothing is without change.
  • The wise let go of the self and become free of attachments.
  • Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.
