Griot Tales

What is a griot?                 Planning your griot tale

What is a griot?

"Griot"  is pronounced

"GREE oh."

griot
A griot is an oral historian from West Africa.  In the days before books, people remembered their history by telling stories.  People who were particularly skilled became professional story tellers, in charge of carrying on the oral tradition of their society.
The audience often participates in the storytelling process, playing music, acting out parts, singing, responding, and contributing sound effects to enhance the story.

Planning your griot tale

1. Choose a story or proverb.
Look here for ideas.  Mrs. Hinkle also has a collection.
2. Plan your script.
The narrator(s) can read.  (Of course, the real griot had it memorized.)  If you choose a proverb, create a story which illustrates the proverb as its moral.
3. Plan the sound effects.
Use only your body for sound effects (mouth, hands, voice).  The story must be completely portable.
4. Who will narrate?  Who will direct the audience?
The director will teach the audience and give them cues.
5. Rehearse your presentation.
Enjoy!
6. Scoring rubric
  • Story elements include setting, character, & plot
  • Delivery is interactive with the audience
  • Presentation shows evidence of adequate preparation
